An interesting perspective on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and approach
Personally, I agree with Ryron. Original idea of BJJ was exactly what he is talking about… survival.
However, with a IBJJF tournament approach, it is hard to practice it to full extend. Never the less, some of it can be applied in a tournament. If you find yourself in a bad spot in a tournament match, jumping to rash escape is a bad idea. If you opponent mounted, passed your guard or established side mount, he has already gained the points and how fast you escape will not make the difference. So at this stage , your job is not to escape ASAP, but to escape efficiently and successfully. Thus, maintaining a safe posture or position, watching your opponents moves and planning your escape is a more advisable approach then jumping the gun and escaping rashly.
So, Ryron’s advice can be applied in a tournament scenario … just be mindful that you do not have all the time in the work in a 6 minute match.
