Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion by Sam Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I discovered this book through Tim Farris’ podcasts. Sam Harris read a short essay on hallucinogenic drugs and spirituality on Farris’ podcast (in fact its an excerpt from one of the chapters in the book) and also had a longer podcast with Tim.
Through those podcast I discovered his views on spirituality and meditation.
As started reading the book, I began practicing Vipassana (awareness) meditation on daily basis in no part due to Harris’ description of the practice and it’s benefits.
However, most importantly, the strength of this book and Sam Harris’ approach to spirituality is it’s foundation in rational thought and scientific method. I have always struggled with the difficulty of not buying into religious or new age dogma and still following the practice of spirituality and meditation. Harris argues for exactly such separation.
This book is for people who believe that spirituality is possible outside of religion and new age fairy tales.
This sounds really interesting. Might have to check it out
Thanks for the comment. I very much enjoyed the book and love vipassana meditation
